HOW TO INSTALL FONTS
• Here's how to Download, Unzip/Extract and Install one of my fonts. You will need an unzipping program to extract the font(s) from the .zip file that you download. I use WinZip but HERE are some free ones. Once you have a ZIP program, you're ready to go:

1] Click on the font download link and it will download to a default folder on your computer -or- it will ask you where to download the file to (tell it where to download the file, but remember where you downloaded it to).

2] Once the zipped font is downloaded go to the folder/location where you downloaded it and double click on it. If you have a zip program it should open up into the program.

3] Now there are 2 ways to install fonts. The easy way is, when you've opened the zipped font into your ZIP program, Unzip/Extract the font file(s) (The font files have a .ttf and/or .fon extension) to C:\Windows\Fonts. If you can't get the easy way to work, you can try to install the font(s) the 'proper' way, like this:

a] Unzip/Extract the Font(s) to a folder on your Computer (or somewhere else, just remember where you extracted the font(s)) .

b] Click on the START button, then select SETTINGS then CONTROL PANEL.

c] When the Control Panel Window pops up, Double Click on FONTS. If you can't find FONTS in the control panel, Press the Windows Key + R to open the RUN Command window, type in C:\Windows\Fonts and click OK. [You can also get the RUN Command window by clicking the START button and go to Run...]

d] When the FONTS window pops up, select File then Install New Font...


e] An Add Fonts window will pop up. In the bottom left corner is a Folder Browser, just go to the folder that you extracted the Font(s) to, select the Font(s) and then click on OK. Now the Font(s) are installed.

• Make sure that you install the font(s) first, then open up your apps (so the app will recognize the font).

OTHER FONT INSTALLATION INFO
• If for some reason you can't get a font to install, you can also use a font temporarily. Go to where the font is located and Double click on the font file (.ttf and/or .fon) and the font will open into a font viewer. When you have a font opened into the font viewer, it acts as if it were installed but only when the font viewer window remains open (you can minimize it if you want). If you close the font viewer window you can no longer use the font unless you re-open it or install it. If you used the Temporary method and saved a file using a 'temporary' font, the font will not be displayed properly unless the font is opened into the font viewer or installed.

• When coding a font into a web page (except when using Font Embedding) keep in mind that your visitors will not be able to see the font being used unless they have it installed on their system. If they don't have the font installed, they will see a default font instead. The same thing happens when using IM programs. If you're chatting with someone using a specific font, the person(s) you are chatting with will not be able to see the font unless they have it installed as well.

• I originally used 'techno overload' and modified a bunch of the characters so they were the same height. Since I get asked this question a lot, I decided to make a new font with all of the smaller characters called 'Technique'.

Why aren't the fonts in color like the images on your site? They look B&W when I use them.

• When using a font in a program, you can only assign your text a single color (or sometimes you can give each character a color). To give your text more color you should use a graphics program like Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, Gimp, or Pixia. I recommend using a program that can use layers, that way you can keep the 'text' separate from the background, making it easier to 'paint' your text.

What programs do you use to make your fonts?
• with all font making programs, you can create all of the glyphs (characters) from within the program, but I rarely use the editor in a font making program (only for the TTF version of bitmap fonts). I like to create all of my characters within a vector image program then import them into the font making program. Vector image programs give you more freedom when drawing the characters. Here are all of the programs that I use (or have used) to make my fonts:

FONT MAKING PROGRAMS

FontLab and ScanFont - FontLab is one the best Font Making Program to date. It's got TONS of features, a great editor and it's very easy to use. ScanFont is also a good program, it's best for making fonts from images and is great for beginners. I use it to make all of my Handwriting fonts. I use FontLab and ScanFont for tweaking and compiling all of my fonts.

Fontographer - It was sold by Macromedia, but now it's sold by FontLab. It doesn't have as many features as FontLab but it's still a great program. I've only used an older version.

Softy - This program is very basic, I mainly use it for Bitmap fonts [.fon], but you can also make TTF's.

Font Creator Program - I tried this program out for a couple of weeks but gave up using it because it's not that user friendly.


• Here are a couple of other Font Making programs that you may want to check out:

DoubleType - An Open Source font editor (written in Java).

FontForge - An Open Source font editor.



VECTOR IMAGE PROGRAMS

Illustrator - This is the main program that I use for making the characters for my fonts. It's very easy to use.

Photoshop - I use it for image editing and for drawing Bitmap font characters, but you can do some Vector stuff too.

Freehand - This is another great program but I still like Illustrator a lot better.

Xara (Xara X) - This a good program for beginners but I can't stand the Quick-Key layout :(

Corel Draw - This is what I first used when making fonts, but it does a really bad job with compiling the font.

Flash - I use it every once in a while to experiment with new fonts.


• Here are a couple of other Vector Graphic programs that you may want to check out:

Inkscape - It's Open Source, Free and it's similar to Illustrator, Freehand, CorelDraw, and Xara X.

Microsoft Expression "Acrylic Graphic Designer" - I tried the previous version, Expression 3, and it was a decent Vector Graphic program. The newer version is too large of a download for me to try (I'm on dial-up) and I'm not sure if the program will be free.

Do you have MAC versions of your fonts?
• Sorry, all of the fonts I make are Windows True Type Fonts. If you use a Mac, you could try This PC to Mac font converter to convert the font(s). I don't have a Mac, or access to one, so I'm not sure if/how it works, but several people I've recommended it to said that it worked for them. If you use OS X, then Windows TTFs should work without converting them.

Can you offer a zip file with all of your fonts?
• Sorry, I'd like to have big ZIP with all of my fonts, but I can't at this time. I live way out in the country (about 20 miles away from my ISP's main HUB) and have a really slow internet connection. Uploading/Updating a huge file with all of my fonts would take hours :( All I can offer at this time are .zip packs of each letter (and one for numbers). You can find them on each font page, click on "Download all of the fonts listed above, in a single .zip file" to download all of the fonts for that letter.

• Yes, feel free to use any of my fonts. All of my Fonts are Freeware and you can use them any way you want to (Personal use, Commercial use, or whatever).

Why doesn't the apostrophe ' show up properly in my word processor?
• For some weird reason when I compile my fonts, it "hides" the apostrophe. There is a way to get it to work. If you copy the apostrophe from somewhere else, then paste it into where you need it, it will work. For example, in your word processor, type in a ' in the point size or font selector, highlight the ' and copy it, then paste it into your doc. Or you can copy the ' from this FAQ.

• I also place a ' into the ` [grave] character. It's the key with the ~ [tilde] (left of 1!, above tab, below Esc).

Why can't I embed 'this' font in my PDF file?
• On 6/1/06 I uploaded fixed versions of all of the fonts with this problem. If you have one of my fonts with this problem, please download the updated font from this site.

• E-mail me at aefonts[AT]frontiernet[DOT]net (make sure you replace the [AT] and [DOT] with the proper characters) if you are still having problems embedding one of the fonts.

Problem using fonts with Illustrator or CSS web pages!
• In April 2002, I had to rename all of my fonts taking out the ( and ) in each name. The ( and ) were causing problems with Illustrator files that used one of the older fonts. When you tried to open a file with one of the older fonts in it, it would bring up an error and not open the file properly. Also, web pages that coded in an older font using CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) would not display the font properly. So if you are using an older version of a font with ( and ) in its name, I'd recommend downloading the newer version from this site.

• If you have saved an Illustrator file using one of the older fonts, there is a way that you can fix the file. You can either HEX edit the file or open the file in a text editor (like Notepad or WordPad) to fix it. Once you have opened the file, replace all of the (BRK) with BRK then save the file. Make sure you make a backup of the original just in case something goes wrong. Now download the new version of the font used in the Illustrator file from this site, and now the file should open properly now using the newer font.
